At the beginning of the 16th century, Camerino and its Lordship experienced a tragical period, but at the same time, some of the higher points of its history. After Varano and three of his sons barely escaped a massacre at the bloody hands of Cesare Borgia (15th century), Giovanni Maria quickly took Camerino with the help of his mother Giovanna Malatesta under the Medici. Pope Leone 10th conceded the title of Duke to Giovanni Maria with a sumptuous ceremony and the participation of the papal delegacy, representatives of the high clergy and the Italian nobility who came especially to Camerino to pay tribute to him. The solemnity of that event was narrated to the reporters and written in the journal 'History of the City of Camerino' by the historian Camillo Lilli. On the 9th August 2015, these events will be recalled, preceded and followed by Exhibitions, Shows and other initiatives to relive the atmosphere of those times and some aspects of the ancient Varanese court.
